Neil deGrasse Tyson applies scientific methods to locate Barbie Land in reality

Neil deGrasse Tyson has gained fame as the ultimate movie spoiler and explainer of scientific concepts in films on social media. This week, he took on the challenge of analyzing Barbie Land, and his findings were quite interesting. Not only did he provide a historical background on Oppenheimer and U.S. nuclear tests, but he also used his expertise in astrophysics to assess the film’s depiction of the sun, moon, and flora in order to determine the possible location of Barbie’s pink wonderland.

According to deGrasse Tyson, based on the moon’s orientation in @BarbietheMovie, Barbie World is situated somewhere between 20 and 40 degrees north latitude on Earth. This places it roughly in the southern half of the United States or the northern half of Mexico. By considering the presence of palm trees, which typically grow in regions between 20 and 30 degrees latitude, the potential locations for Barbie World are further narrowed down to West Texas, the U.S. Gulf Coast, and northern Mexico.

In his conclusion, deGrasse Tyson noted that the film depicted the sun and moon rising and setting over the ocean. Therefore, if Barbie World was indeed located in the United States, it would most likely be situated in the Florida Keys. It is worth mentioning that Warner Bros., the studio behind the movie, did not provide any comment on deGrasse Tyson’s analysis when approached by EW. However, according to an interview with director Greta Gerwig and her team in Architectural Digest, the design of Barbie World was influenced by midcentury modernism in Palm Springs.
